SELF-REGULATORY INITIATIVE (SRI) ON ECO DESIGN FOR MEDICAL IMAGING EQUIPMENT

COCIR Companies are committed to contribute to the challenges for a greener and more sustainable world economy by developing new environmentally performing technologies and concepts, while at the same time improving the clinical value of medical imaging devices.

COCIR companies proactively committed with the European Commission to develop a self-regulatory initiative under the Ecodesign Directive to reduce the environmental impact of medical imaging equipment.

In 2008, COCIR presented the project to the European Commission and the Consultation Forum and, in 2009, a first version of the methodology and a pilot project were submitted for comments.

Capitalising on the experience gathered and feedback received the SRI Steering Committee submitted the new SRI Version 2 methodology in February 2012. The consultation phase closed on 5 March 2012. In November 2012 the European commission acknoledged the initiative recognizing the benefits for society and healthcare.

The COCIR SRI is a growing project. Each year the COCIR SRI Steering Committee applies the complex methodology to a new product group, defining use scenarios, assumptions, measurement methodologies and setting an ecodesign target. Each year a SRI Status Report is published with detailed reporting on the progress and achievement of the  Initiative.
