Progress on Safe Harbor!

COCIR welcomes the Opens external link in new windowagreement reached this week between the EU and the U.S. on a new framework for transatlantic data flows (referred as the EU-US Privacy Shield). We also applaud yesterday's announcement by EU Data Protection Authorities that existing transfer mechanisms may continue to be used for personal data transfers to the U.S, until a definitive assessment of the new arrangement has been made.

The new agreement shows that there is political will to end legal uncertainty. However, COCIR urges the European Commission and the U.S. Government to work swiftly to complete the details of the new framework and call on EU Data Protection Authorities to take a positive stance on the assessment of the arrangement and the legal validity of alternative transfer tools under the new framework.
